comparing key aspects of the EIC Transition funding scheme between 2023 and 2024, highlighting differences in open call structure, Technology Readiness Level (TRL) requirements, proposal length, funding model, and patent analysis involvement.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition funding scheme plays a critical role in advancing innovative technologies from the lab to the market. While maintaining its core objectives, notable changes have been introduced in the 2024 Work Programme compared to 2023. Understanding these similarities and differences is crucial for applicants aiming to harness these opportunities.

Key Similarities:

Core Focus: Both 2023 and 2024 programs remain dedicated to supporting the maturation and validation of novel technologies, guiding them from a lab environment to applicable real-world settings.

Funding and Duration: Projects continue to be expected to request between 0.5 to 2.5 million EUR with a 100% funding rate and have a duration ranging from 1 to 3 years.

Evaluation Process: The evaluation remains a two-stage process involving remote evaluation followed by an interview.

Key Differences:

Open Call vs Challenges: In 2024, EIC Transition will only have the Open call, with no predefined thematic priorities, encouraging proposals in any field of science, technology, or application. The single deadline is set for September 18th, 2024.

Technology Readiness Level (TRL): The starting TRL in 2024 can be as low as TRL3, with the target remaining at TRL 5 to 6.

Submission Restrictions: Only one proposal per eligible originating ERC Proof of Concept is allowed in 2024.

Funding Model: The eligible costs will take the form of a lump sum, determined during the evaluation process. Applicants must propose the lump sum amount based on estimated project costs.

Proposal Length: The maximum length for proposals has been extended to 22 pages, up from 20 in 2023.

Patent Analysis: In 2024, the EIC may consult the European Patent Office for assessing technological novelty, inventive merit, and strategy, providing additional information to the evaluation Jury.

These changes signal a more open and flexible approach, encouraging a wider array of innovative ideas. Applicants now have the opportunity to propose projects at an earlier stage of development (TRL3) and should carefully consider the lump sum funding model when budgeting. The extended proposal length allows for more detailed project descriptions, enhancing the chance to convey the full potential of their innovations.
